It was the week of my graduation from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (NYC), and the week prior, I had went on an audition for the national tour of The Civil War and hadn't heard anything. During my graduation, I remember our speaker was trying to give us level advice about the reality of how long it might take to land our first job, let alone get your Equity card. Her estimate: 5 to 10 years – if we're lucky.
Well a week later, just as I had suited myself up for the long haul of disappointment and rejection, which sorry to say is still inevitable, I received a phone call offering me my first job in the national tour of The Civil War and my Equity Card!
I count it a blessing, and not luck, that I got my Equity card, as it has given me a plethora of great experiences in theatre.
