When I started in Montreal, Canada, professional acting meant radio. The union then was ACRA, the Association of the Canadian Radio Artists, and when I got my first job I automatically became a member of it. In the 1950s, when TV arrived, it enlarged itself into ACTRA. Around the same time, as more professional theatre companies started up, Canadian Equity was formed and all ACTRA members were invited to join. From that, when I was in New York in 1957, I was admitted straight into American Equity.
