Rubber City Theatre has taken a big step this month, becoming Akron's only Equity union theater and just the fifth in Northeast Ohio.
At a time when many Actors Equity Association theaters across the country are reconsidering their Equity status, the 90-seat theater, housed on Furnace Street adjacent to the 1893 building that was formerly WhiteSpace Creative headquarters, has forged ahead with an Equity contract.
Rubber City, which has a Small Professional Theatre (SPT) contract for theaters with fewer than 350 seats, had originally planned to make the leap by announcing by last April that the theater would become Equity starting in September. The pandemic that hit in March delayed that plan until now.
